yes? the japanese have attacked pearl harbor. our pacific fleet, at anchor, unprepared? it's terrible. it has to be. and it's not over. yesterday, december 7, 1941 -- a date which will live in infamy -- the united states of american was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the empire of japan. the distance of hawaii from japan makes it obvious that the attacks was planned many days or even weeks ago. during the intervening time the japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive the united states by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace. i regret to tell you that many american lives have been lost. yesterday the japanese government also launched an attack against malaya. last night japanese forces attacked hong kong. guam. the philippine islands. wake island. and this morning the japanese attacked midway island. the facts speak for themselves. with confidence in our armed forces -- with the unbounding determination of our people -- we will gain the inevitable triumph -- so help us god. i ask that the congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by japan on sunday, december 7, 1941, a state of war -- gentlemen, the crisis we face is not the fact that our enemies believe they can defeat us -- it's the fact that our people believe it too. i want a plan -- a workable plan -- to hit the heart of japan, to bomb them the way they have bombed us. what if the japanese did invade? do not tell me. it can't be done. have the planes made it to china? so those brave men are flying blind and running out of fuel. god help them.
